"Custom dashboard" sounds expensive by default, and sometimes it is. But the price comparison people actually need to make isn't custom-vs-free — it's custom-vs-the-time-currently-spent-checking-six-different-tools-to-answer-one-question.
What a dashboard is actually for
Not decoration. A good dashboard answers the two or three questions an owner asks every single day — what's booked this week, what's overdue, what needs attention right now — in one glance, instead of a five-minute tour through separate tools each morning.
When it's worth building
- You or someone on your team checks the same 3-4 numbers daily across different systems
- Decisions get delayed because pulling the numbers together takes real time
- You've outgrown what a generic template dashboard inside your CRM can show
When it's not, yet
If you're under five people and can still hold the whole business in your head, a custom dashboard is solving a problem you don't have yet. Build the underlying system first — the dashboard is worth building once there's enough data flowing through it to be worth looking at.
